Five Mistakes You Make When Training New Instructors


Your Instructors are your product when you own an indoor cycling studio.  If the instructor isn’t outstanding, you’ll be left with low capacity classes.  Low capacity equals low profitability.  


After six successful years of operation, we’ve determined five mistakes that new studio owners make when training new instructors. Here they are! 


  1. They let new instructors do whatever they want.  You need to define the brand and style of classes that will be taught in your studio.  You need to protect that brand quality and train new instructors to understand that they will be teaching that style.
  2. They don’t allow instructors to be themselves.  Even though they have been trained to uphold your brand, they need to let their personality shine through.  You, as the owner, may have sold out classes and you only play EDM.  There are plenty of clients who don’t like EDM music.  You need instructors that play a wide range of music, have a unique style, and voice.  Let them develop their brand and persona.
  3. They don’t allow the clients to get to know them.  We have found that the more time instructor trainees have during training to get to know the clients, the more likely they will be successful when they start teaching.  Let them ride the Instructor’s Podium in classes.  Encourage them to ride in the studios where they will be teaching (if you have more than one studio) or at the opposite times when they will be teaching (if they will teach on Mondays and Wednesdays at 8 AM, have them ride on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8 AM.)
  4. They create a scarcity mindset that breeds unhealthy competition.  It is easy for instructors to get pretty competitive with instructor trainees.  If you encourage a company culture of teamwork, you’ll find that instructors ride in each other’s classes, promote each other, and build each other up.  Create a “there are enough clients for everyone” mentality.
  5. They don’t pay enough.  As we stated at the very beginning, your instructors are your product.  It is worth paying more for talented instructors.  Not only will your classes have higher capacities, but you will also retain great instructors.  This cuts down on the cost of having to recruit and train new talent.  When writing your business plan, have the right quantity of bikes and set your prices correctly so that you can not only make a profit but make it profitable for your instructors.
